Originals and photocopies of papers of Ralph Smith, the elder brother of Jedediah Strong Smith, born in New York and a farmer in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan; letters from his brothers Ira Smith and Peter Smith, 1842 and 1844, his brother-in-law Solomon A. Simons, 1831, and his sons Cyrus A. Smith, Walter L. Smith, and Ransome Vespasian, 1845-1865, and various other relatives and friends, including H.L. Helman, 1882; R.L. Helman, 1854; Alice Isbell, 1876; William Jedediah Jones, 1860; James McMullin, 1876; and Lydia and John Tryon, 1850. Three family Bible records are among the papers.

Jedediah Strong Smith was born June 24, 1799 in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. He was the son of Jedediah Smith of New Hampshire and was the eldest of fourteen children. Jedediah's early childhood was spent in Ohio where he received and English and Latin education. At thirteen he became a clerk on a Lake Erie freighter where he learned business methods and met traders returning from the Far West. Jedediah became ambitious for an adventure to the wilderness and he went to St. Louis around...
